Hi, I’m Ralph
I’m a nutritionist, kettlebell coach and yoga teacher based in Edinburgh, Scotland.
I started Movement & Nutrition to help busy people like you stay healthy and strong. So you can lead the active life you want to – for as long as you want to.
And I have a unique background to help you achieve a lifelong and healthy approach to diet and exercise. I’ll give you the tools, motivation and accountability – without taking over your life.
So, if you’ve got time, here is my background.
I’m a Nutritionist with a bachelor’s (honours 1st class) degree in nutrition from Queen Margaret University, Edinburgh.
And I returned to lecture at Queen Margaret and teach the Nutritionists and Dieticians of tomorrow.
Lastly, I’m registered with the Association for Nutrition (the independent regulator for Registered Nutritionists).
In short, I have the academic knowledge to give you evidence-based nutritional advice. The knowledge to help you make healthy food choices backed by science.
With my help, you can make the healthy choice the delicious choice. And keep it quick and simple.
I was a professional chef for over 25 years. And I’ve taught countless complete novices and experienced cooks how to prepare delicious food.
So I know you can cook. All you need is a few basic skills and you can take control of your diet.
Good food doesn’t have to be complicated or take a lot of time.
I started training with kettlebells in 2007. As a 3rd degree black belt, I taught Taekwondo for over 10 years. And I used kettlebells to improve my strength and fitness for my martial art.
In 2015 I certified as a StrongFirst instructor and I’ve been teaching kettlebells ever since. Why StrongFirst? Because StrongFirst sets the standard for kettlebell instructor certification.
Today I teach how to get the best health and strength benefits from kettlebell training. I teach 1-2-1, in classes and in my role as “Director of Movement” at Active-X Backs, Edinburgh’s leading osteopathic clinic specialising in lower back pain.
I practised yoga throughout my Taekwondo career to maintain the flexibility and mobility needed for this dynamic martial art. Now I’ve stepped back from Taekwondo but have deepened my yoga practice and certified as a yoga teacher.
Our modern lifestyle slowly erodes the natural mobility we are born with. I teach a yoga practice that concentrates on restoring and maintaining that natural mobility.
And like kettlebell training, I teach all age groups, both 1-2-1 and to patients at Active-X Backs osteopathic clinic.
The synergy of kettlebell training and yoga practice
Kettlebells drills and Yoga poses are skills to be practised and trained. And the true health benefits are in the journey, not the destination.
Hardstyle kettlebell training will improve your mobility. But the emphasis is on strength.
And a yoga practice will increase your strength. Yet the focus is improving and maintaining your mobility and natural range of movement.
Combining the best from yoga with the best of kettlebell training exploits their natural synergy. It guarantees a holistic approach to exercise that nourishes your long-term health.
And leaving out the unnecessary “window dressing” reduces the time burden without compromising the health benefits.
Exercise is great for your health, but it can test the limits of your body. Poor quality movement increases the physical stresses of training and life, escalating your risk of injury.
The ability to assess your movement and correct poor movement patterns is an essential skill for any coach.
In 2016 I certified with Functional Movement Systems. The FMS method uses screening and corrective strategies to improve the movement of people from all walks of life.
The Functional Movement Systems concept is simple “Move well. Move often”.
